The Fountain in Gratz Park was a gift to the children of Lexington from James Lane Allen, a noted Kentucky author.  Mr. Allen attended Transylvania University and in 1878 taught Latin and English at a prep school that was located in the Kitchen.  The fountain was sculpted by New York artist Joseph Pollia and was dedicated in 1933.
